Auricular Therapy

Auricular Therapy at boulder acupuncture clinic AmalunaAuricular therapy uses the acupuncture points in the ears. The ears represent a microsystem of the entire body. Specific areas of the ear reflect specific areas of the body, including internal organs. There are also empirical points on the ear for various conditions. Ear needles may seem unpleasant but are often very relaxing. Just imagine how it feels when someone rubs your ears. There are many nerve endings in the ear and stimulating them can have powerful effects on the nervous system.

Ears can also be used diagnostically. Areas of redness, veins, bumps and dry spots can all indicate imbalances in the corresponding areas of your body. For example, someone with a chronic knee injury will often have a dark vein in the part of the ear that corresponds to the knee.

I use small needles, seeds, stainless steel and gold balls, and small tacks in the ear to stimulate acupuncture points. Many of these options are left in the ear for 2-7 days and can be used as a take-home treatment. Stimulating the ear points yourself in the days between acupuncture appointments can increase the effectiveness of your treatment.

The NADA protocol is a widely used system to treat addictive behaviors. This includes smoking, drug addiction, food addiction and food cravings, obsessive-compulsive disorder and even post-traumatic stress disorder. The US military uses NADA in VA hospitals for PTSD and with soldiers returning from combat. Drug and rehab facilities use it to help the detox process and M.D.’s use it to help patients with cigarette cravings. It is generally beneficial for reducing high-stress levels.

Mild electrical stimulation may be applied to ear points for 10-15 minutes. Ear seeds are painless and a great option for individuals who are afraid of needles. Click Here for more information on how acupuncture points on the ear work to affect the entire body.
