5 Reasons To Try Oil Cleansing
Published on February 12, 2014 by Dr. Caitlin Gordon
Why would I wash my face with oil?
1. Turns out, oil is actually extremely effective at removing makeup and dirt. Because it is chemically more similar to what is naturally on your skin, it keeps ph level balanced and skin optimally moisturized.
From acne.org: “Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principles of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables, and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin.”
2. Often breakouts are due to skin that is actually dried out and so it overproduces oil (sebum) which then clogs pores. The more you dry out your skin, the more dead skin cells accumulate on the surface mixing with the now overproduction of oil as your skin tries to lubricate itself, and you’ve entered a vicious cycle of clogged pores. When used consistently and properly, oil cleansing can resolve blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne.**
3. With no harsh soaps, chemicals, preservatives or artificial ingredients you don’t have to worry that what you use on your face is actually causing free radical damage and leading to the breakdown of your collagen (collagen is what keeps your skin looking smooth, plump, and young). I think this is the BEST reason to use the oil cleansing method. Anything to reduce the amount of toxic, chemical-laden crap we use in our beauty routines is good news, and your body will thank you.
4. The recommended oils are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory so they help prevent blemishes from forming, in addition to treating existing spots. These qualities help protect your skin from free radical damage caused by environmental toxins (like air pollution!).
5. This system is amazing for dark spots and anti-aging. When you spend a couple of minutes every night massaging your face, you increase blood flow and collagen production. This reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and helps fade scars, while evening out skin tone.
**A note about oil cleansing for acne: Acne is a very complicated issue. You cannot resolve most acne with a change in face-washing alone. Acne is the skin’s way of trying to detox. This means something internally is out of balance. Dietary changes and acupuncture are very effective at helping to control and reduce acne. Hormones and intestinal health play a huge role here, so I do not want to imply that the oil cleansing method is a magical solution.
